Behind every international dog arrival from a high-risk country is a critical stop — a CDC-licensed animal care facility. These hubs make sure pups don’t bring home anything more than jet lag.

1. Why These Facilities Exist

Stopping dog rabies from re-entering the U.S. without sacrificing safety or welfare.

Foreign-vaccinated dogs from high-risk countries must have a reservation at one of these facilities for exam and rabies revaccination — and a 28-day quarantine if they don’t have a valid rabies serology titer before arrival. CDC

2. The 7 CDC-Licensed Animal Care Facilities

✈️ Atlanta, GA — Dandie Scottie Kennel

A trusted gateway at Hartsfield–Jackson (ATL) for high-risk dog arrivals. Reservations via email. CDC

✈️ Los Angeles, CA — Kennel Club LAX

Handles cargo (preferred) and other shipments that require clearance. Advance reservations are crucial. CDC

✈️ Los Angeles, CA — Rue’s Kennels @ LAX

Rue's Kennels is a renowned establishment dedicated to facilitating the seamless movement of dogs entering or departing from various countries. CDC

✈️ Miami, FL — Pet Limo

A South Florida hub. CDC

✈️ New York, NY — The ARK Pet Oasis (JFK)

Important note: dogs must land at JFK, not Newark or LaGuardia, to use this facility. CDC

✈️ Washington, DC (IAD) — Pender Pet Retreat

Serving the mid-Atlantic region with reservation options for exams and revaccination. CDC

✈️ Philadelphia, PA — Gateway Animal Care Center

Northeast option for dogs entering through PHL. CDC

3. How the Process Works (Quick Breakdown)

  • Dogs from high-risk countries need a CDC Dog Import Form and reservation at one of these facilities before U.S. entry.

  • If no valid rabies titer, the facility must include a 28-day quarantine.

  • Dogs must arrive through the airport where the facility is located.

4. Tips for a Smooth Import Experience

Think practical:

Book your facility reservation early

Have all paperwork ready (CDC Dog Import Form, vaccination docs, etc.)

Understand airport specifics (e.g., cargo vs. manifest)

Know quarantine expectations

These licensed facilities are more than checkpoints — they’re guardians of public health and partners in reuniting families with their long-awaited companions.
