In-Cabin Pet Travel – Domestic USA

In-cabin travel is the least stressful and most controlled way for small dogs and cats to fly within the United States. Most U.S. airlines allow pets under 15–20 lbs (including the carrier) to travel in the aircraft cabin when all requirements are met.

Pet Size & Carrier Requirements

Your pet must fit comfortably in a soft-sided, airline-approved carrier that can slide fully under the seat in front of you. Pets must remain inside the carrier at all times during boarding, taxi, takeoff, and landing, and cannot come out during the flight—even if they give you the “but I’m cute” look.

Behavior Expectations

Airlines require pets to be well-behaved, quiet, and non-disruptive. Excessive barking, whining, or attempts to escape the carrier can result in denied boarding. In-cabin travel is best suited for pets who are calm, accustomed to confinement, and comfortable in busy airport environments.

Airport Potty & Relief Areas

Most major airports provide designated pet relief areas, both before and after security. Planning bathroom breaks before boarding is essential, as pets must stay in their carrier once onboard the aircraft.

Booking Your Pet’s Flight

In-cabin pet space is extremely limited and granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Online booking is often unreliable—calling the airline directly is strongly recommended to confirm availability, carrier size rules, and pet fees before purchasing your ticket.

Domestic Health Certificate (CVI) – Required for All Transports

While not always required by every airline for in-cabin domestic travel, a Domestic Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) is considered best practice for all pet travel within the United States.

Health certificates must be issued by a licensed, accredited veterinarian and are typically valid for 10–30 days, depending on the destination state and airline policies.

During TSA screening, pets must be removed from the carrier while the carrier goes through the X-ray machine. You will carry your pet through the metal detector. If your pet is anxious, reactive, or skittish, you may request a private TSA screening room, which allows for a quieter, safer screening experience without the risk of escape.

Dogs & Cats Welcome

Both dogs and cats are accepted for in-cabin domestic travel, provided they meet airline size, behavior, and health requirements.
